Welcome to BORK CLOOB!

I CAN HAS DISCUSSION TIEMS?

One week down, and two more to go in this month! How’s the reading coming along?

  1. Have you chosen your book? If not, do you want me to help you pick a book out?
  2. If you have chosen a book already, have you started it?
  3. Has anything happened in the book that you found exceptionally surprising?

I have to confess, I’ve only read two pages of my book so far. How’s reading going for you guys?

I haven’t picked my book yet! I think about it a lot but the problem is actually that I have too many books to pick from? Is it ok if I pick like a series I never finished? Because then I’d like to just do that and I guess review the series as a whole?

You can interpret the theme however you’d like! An unfinished series is a totally great idea! Finish that sucker up!

For this month’s BORK CLOOB book I chose Afterwar by Gloria Skurzynski. I’d started reading the series when I was 12, and never finished it, losing interest mid-way through the third book. Recently though I’ve been on a dystopian youth lit kick, and I thought I’d try to finish the series out. I restarted from book one…and promptly lost interest in roughly the same spot of book three. The book’s been sitting untouched for a few months, but since this month’s theme is Unfinished Business, and this book is my super duper unfinished business, I thought it would be a good opportunity to finally cross it off my list.

Added! Welcome to BORK CLOOB!

THEME: June 2012 - “Unfinished Business”

I’m impatient, so I wanted to get a jump start on BORK CLOOB now. Since we’re already over a week into the month though, I wanted to start on an easy-ish theme.

The theme for this month is “Unfinished Business.”

Suggestions on interpreting this month’s theme:

  • books about ghosts/spirits/the supernatural
  • books about revenge
  • books about revisiting a place in the character’s past
  • finish a book you’ve already started

Remember, those are just suggestions, and if you’d like to take the theme in a totally different direction you can absolutely do that!

Please let us know what book you’ll be reading and why! Below is a suggested format for doing so, but adapt/change/ignore it as you please!

  1. Book title and author:
  2. Summary:
  3. Why I want to read this:
  4. How it relates to the theme:

If you’d like to suggest a theme for next month, hit up our ask box/submissions page!

How BORK CLOOB works:

What SOUPAR CULL BORK CLOOB is:

SOUPAR CULL BORK CLOOB is a super cool book club for everyone who wants the support and enthusiasm of book club without the constraints of a normal book club. In BORK CLOOB you choose the book you read each month.

Okay so how does this work?

Each month will have a theme. The theme could be anything from “magic” to “kickass ladies.” You get to read any book you want, as long as it goes along with the theme. Interpretation of the theme is up to you. If the theme is “magic,” you could read a book about magic tricks, a book where magic features heavily in the plot, or a book about Magic Johnson. Similarly, if the theme is “kickass ladies,” you could read a biography about a woman, a book with a female protagonist, or a book written by a woman. The way you choose to interpret the theme is all your own, but if you’re stumped I will provide a few suggested interpretations. Feel free to use or not use them as you like.

Once a week someone (or several people) will post discussion topics. Since we’re all reading different books, the discussion topics will be slightly less focused than in a traditional book club. They may range from “Going off what you’ve read so far, what is the one ending you expect to happen the least?” to “So how are y’all enjoying your books so far?” Anyone may present a discussion topic, but each person may only pose one question/discussion a week.

At the end of the month, we’ll each review our books. You may do this however you please, be it through slide show, essay, vlog, or interpretative dance. The important thing is that you post it so that we can all discover new books!
